One of the more revered figures of independent music to emerge out of the 1980s, Morrisey is a singer/songwriter who is equally known as a solo artist and as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the alternative rock band The Smiths. With an incredibly distinctive voice and bleak lyrics, Morrissey created his own style of songwriting, often focusing on loneliness, the end of relationships and being ostracized from society. After The Smiths' tumultuous breakup in 1987, he continued to create indie pop/rock music and is now recognized as one of the most influential artists of British pop music and modern independent rock.
