Mike Watt is a singer/songwriter and bassist from San Pedro, California who is probably best-known for co-founding the punk group Minutemen with guitarist D. Boon and drummer George Hurley in 1980. Though the group pioneered an econo sound that blended elements of hardcore, progressive rock and jazz together to create a unique sonic amalgam, the band's career was cut short when D. Boon tragically died in a car accident in 1985. Never one to dwell on loss and get caught in a languid work state, Watt formed Firehose in 1986 with Hurley on drums again and guitarist/vocalist Ed Crawford. Having since gone on to play with a number of various projects--including serving as bassist for the reunited Stooges and co-fronting Dos, a band with ex-Black Flag bassist Kira Roessler--Watt has earned a reputation as one of the best bassists of his generation.
