Strike a Prose: Writing for Justice (nonfiction)

Friday October 11, 10:00 AM 12:30 PM

In this creative writing workshop inspired by "The Struggle for Justice" , you will explore themes of democracy, social justice and freedom as you build a blended essay. The exhibition features images of activists and leaders from American movements for social justice. Through reading, discussion and guided writing exercises you will reflect on what it means to fight for something you believe in.

Led by local writer Willona Sloan, these workshops are open to writers of all levels who are 18+. Materials are provided.

The Struggle for Justice showcases the determined men and womenfrom key nineteenth-century historical figures to contemporary leaderswho struggled to achieve civil rights for disenfranchised or marginalized groups.

The exhibition, featuring more than forty photographs, paintings, posters, buttons and sculptures, includes portraits of civil rights leaders Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall and Martin Luther King, Jr.; womens-rights advocates Carrie Chapman Catt and Betty Friedan; Native American activist Leonard Crow Dog; cultural icons Jackie Robinson and singer Marian Anderson; United Farm Workers organizer César Chávez; LGBT activist, author, and playwright Larry Kramer; and Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

Please plan to arrive at the 8th and G Street, NW entrance at 9:45am so we may begin promptly at 10:00am. Because this workshop begins prior to public hours, those more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted into the museum.
