Omar Sosa is a Latin jazz composer, bandleader and pianist who began his musical journey at age eight, when he started studying marimba composition. After taking up piano at Escuela Nacional de Musica in Havana, he developed a taste for jazz and submerged himself into the rich Latin jazz community in Cuba. Sosa found himself in San Francisco during the mid-1990s and quickly made a name for himself with his Afro-Cuban jazz style, a mix of modern jazz, Latin rhythms, spoken word and North African percussion. Since the release of his debut album Omar Omar, in 1997, he has built an impressive and critically acclaimed catalog of records over his decades-long career, including 2011's Calma.
