The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. proudly presents the 1st showcase of the OnStage Korea 2019 Season featuring the innovative performance group UNI-FI as they present Sound of Connection, a musical journey to capture meaning of hope in our lives.

Founded in 2008, UNI-FI is a creative ensemble with a diverse portfolio of world music and arts brought together by the motto Create something new by bringing together what's different. Its members are professional artists from various performing arts fields who continually seek to push the boundaries of music itself.

With Sound of Connection, UNI-FI showcases its unique brand of performance art through new and vaguely familiar songs, including Wings of the Ideal, Misty, Over the Rainbow, Love Song, and Under the Sea. Each piece involves a collaboration of diverse world instruments: Korean haegeum, electric guitar, contrabass, drums, keyboard, and vocals all find their place. The music of UNI-FI often reinterprets such famous songs from Hollywood film, pop music, and Korean folk, as well as cutting-edge world music. Haegeum, the Korean upright fiddle and an icon of traditional music, gets special attention, complimented by a host of Western instruments. Beloved for centuries, the haegeum actually expresses perfectly the deep Korean emotion of han: a mixture of joy, sorrow, hatred, and desire. In everything they do, UNI-FI effortlessly balances these elements of modern music-making with the traditional culture embedded in Korean instruments.

UNI-FI completed a solo live concert performance in 2017 and has been invited to perform at major events in Korea, including the 50th Anniversary Celebration for Normalization of Diplomatic Relations between Korea and Japan hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 2017 Seoul International Image & Film Festival, and the 130th Anniversary Celebration of Diplomatic Relations between Korea and France. Recognized as one Korea's top performance groups nationally in 2018, UNI-FI is held in high regard for its original performances at home and abroad. Their new album Whale's Day was released in 2019.
