The Chieftains is an instrumental group from Ireland often credited as being the first band to bring traditional Irish music to the world's attention. Although it formed in 1962, the musicians who made up The Chieftains did not start playing together full time until 1975, over
a decade after the band formed, when they marked their commitment to the project with a legendary performance at
the Royal Albert hall in London. Its primary fan base began as a strict folk audience, but with incorporation of pop and rock into its music and the collaborations with established vocalists such as Van Morrison, The Chieftains gained international success and has been recognized with six Grammy Awards. Founder and leader Paddy Moloney arranges most of the band's music and contributes the uilleann pipes, tin whistle, button accordion and bodhran. With the addition of other classic folk instruments such as the fiddle and tin whistles, The Chieftains creates lively and emotional music with roots deep in the musical traditions of Ireland.
