The Count of Monte Cristo is a musical adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' novel of the same name. With music by Frank Wildhorn and lyrics by Jack Murphy, the show debuted in 2009 at the Theater St. Gallen in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Set in a historical context, the show begins just before Napoleon's Hundred Days and takes place in Italy, France and the Mediterranean. The Count of Monte Cristo addresses themes of vengeance, hope and mercy through the story of a man who is put in prison for crimes he did not commit. After the man escapes from prison and acquires a great fortune, he sets out on a quest for revenge against those who wrongfully imprisoned him.
