The Patriot is the moniker of the sports teams at George Mason University. Competing in the Division 1 of the NCAA and members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, the teams are recognizable for their bold green and gold uniforms. The Patriots encompass 11 men's teams and 11 women's teams which include basketball, volleyball, tennis, track and field and swimming and diving. GMU is well-known for its men's basketball team, which first won the NCAA tournament in 1989 and continued a tradition of excellent throughout the 2000s, winning in 2001, 2006 and 2008. The women's soccer and volleyball teams are also renowned for winning 5 consecutive Colonial Athletic Association titles from 1992 to 1996.
