In their collaboration at The Clarice, the acclaimed duo will kick-off with the music of previously overlooked Caribbean composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Born in Guadeloupe to an enslaved plantation worker, Bologne was among the first composers to write string quartets upon relocating to France. Bologne’s music is presented alongside Romantic composers Beethoven and Brahms. William Grant Still, the "Dean" of African-American composers, was the first American composer to have an opera produced by the legendary New York City Opera. Still, who has been among Pine’s longtime favorite composers, closes this program. About Pine’s performance of Still, critic Norman Lebrecht says, “Rachel Barton Pine at her most expressive, and William Grant Still’s Suite for Violin and Piano is thrillingly accomplished, rooted in music of the Deep South but distinctively shaped.”
