The Utrecht University Botanic Gardens date back to the year 1639, when, soon after the establishment of the university itself, there was an undertaking to create a beautiful garden with diverse flora. Since these ventures began, two more gardens have been opened in 1730 and 1920 but the Utrecht remains the oldest and closest to the university. The gardens can be accessed during the spring and summer months by tourists. Entry is free for members of the University and for kids under the age of 12.
