Coast Road, Sunderland, United Kingdom, SR6 7NH
Located in the lovely little village of Marsden in Tyne and Wear, England is the first lighthouse in the world to incorporate alternating electric current - the most advanced form of technology of that time. The impressive red and white structure played a huge part in avoiding ship borne disasters by aiding navigation around the treacherous reefs of Whitburn Steel. Today, although not in use, the lighthouse owned by the National Trust makes for a lovely visit. Visitors are allowed to climb to the top where they are presented with a spectacular view, children can be kept entertained via many fun activities such as quizzes and puzzles, and hungry adults can grab a cup of tea and slice of cake at the café nearby. Entry for National Trust members is free.
