The history of Landguard Fort begins in the 16th Century as a humble set of earthworks and a blockhouse intended to protect Harwich. Much of what exists today was built in the 18th Century with significant additions and alterations made over the years. The fort has been the site of a number of historic battles and was even used as a balloon launching station during the Second World War. Today, the fort has been made open to the public who are welcome to explore this historic structure with the aid of audio tours. Guided tours and group tours are available at an additional cost, and the fort is even home to Felixstowe museum which explores aspects of the region's military and local history, Reports of experiences of the paranormal variety at the fort have been so frequent that Ghost tours are also now available, chronicling the various apparitions and experiences that have been recorded. Who knows? You may even have an experience of your own to share! Spooky and magnificent, Landguard Fort is a tourist attraction for good reason.
