Established on the site of the erstwhile Waverly Fair Grounds, this idyllic park serves as a serene escape amid the urban bustle of Newark. The term 'Weequahic' has its roots in Native American history, and is an ode to the historic ties of the park. Perhaps the highlight of the park is the gargantuan Weequahic Lake, one of the largest in Essex County, which resides in its depth. The verdant and scenic East Coast Greenway traverses the park, which is dotted with picnic grounds, rolling sporting fields and elegantly perched trees. What was once a patchwork of swamps and farmlands, is today a sprawling site which is a wonderful nexus of recreation and natural captivation.
