The origins of the University of Windsor can be traced back to the establishment of the Roman Catholic Assumption College in 1857. Over the years the college grew and expanded, transforming from a denominational college to a public institution affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. The University of Windsor was finally bestowed with the status of an independent university in 1953, almost a century after its establishment. Today, the university offers courses in nine faculties and has an extensive research program. The university's list of alumni features a number of notable literary personalities, musicians, actors and artists like the poet Marie Howe and Golf analyst Bob Weeks. Be sure to stop by the historic Memorial Hall when visiting the campus. This landmark honors the sacrifices of all those brave university alumni who lost their lives as they fought for their country during the two World Wars.
