The acclaimed Cairns Convention Centre is the first among equals when it comes to environmentally developed public structures in Australia. Its striking double-crinkled roof is not only unique but also a space in which to store rainwater. Set very close to the Wet Tropical Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, it consists of laminated hardwood and steel and was built on a former fuel storage tank site. This world-class facility is not only a top convention center in the region but also a premier entertainment and sports venue. Its arena is home to the Cairns Taipans Basketball Team. In addition to sporting events, it also hosts live entertainment acts, exhibitions, trade shows and gala dinners.
