A picturesque city straddling both sides of the River Ness at the northern edge of the Great Glen, Inverness is one of the major economic and administrative centers of the Scottish Highlands. The city has a rich, if turbulent, history and landmarks like the 19th-century Inverness Castle, Inverness Cathedral, and 16th-century Abertarff House stand as reminders of its fascinating past. Other sites like Loch Ness and Tomnahurich Hill attract visitors with the many Gaelic legends and myths that wreathe the rolling highlands. Apart from the myriad cultural festivals and events, Inverness is renowned for sports and athletic competitions. Its annual event, the Highland Games attracts tourists and sports enthusiasts from all over the globe.
