This royal estate belonged to Charlotte Buff during the late eighteenth century, who modeled Lotte in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther. Originally built in 1285, the mansion passed many hands and expanded to include several buildings with time. The popularity of the descendant later saw the house being converted into a memorial and today is managed by the city of Wetzlar's museum department. The permanent exhibition includes images and information about the Buff family with the furniture and decor still intact. Three rooms are also dedicated to the works of Goethe.
