Under the instruction of the Pope, the town was rebuilt as the ideal Renaissance town according to the plans of renowned Florentine architect Bernardo Rossellino. The town is also popularly referred to as the 'touchstone of Renaissance urbanism' and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
