Located between the airport and Kailua-Kona, this ocean-front fishpond is one of the largest examples of ancient Hawaiian aquaculture. For example, the dry stacked walls protect the pond from the surging surf and the mortarless walls allow the water to ebb and flow without hindrance, while keeping the larger fish from escaping. The fishpond walls are the largest remaining in the state and are angled to spread the force of the waves. Aside from all the ancient historical value, the ponds are the perfect spot for families with children to enjoy the shallow calm waters. Best of all, the area is hot, sunny and dry and perfect for snorkeling.
