The 'Nata Mandir' or Dance-hall is an essential architectural facet of ancient Kalinga architecture which is visible all over the city of Bhubaneswar. The nata-mandir of Lingaraj Temple is considered to be a later addition to the gigantic temple complex which is accounted to Salini Keshari in the 11th Century. The structure points to the devadasi tradition which was prevalent in India, where dancers live in temple premises solely dedicating their lives to reputed dance forms like Odissi and Bharathanatyam. Though modern times saw the decline of this tradition, the platforms built for performances still stay as major component of the temple architecture.
