Vrindavan, Vrindavan, India, 281121
If there was one phrase in which you could sum up Vrindavan, it would be 'the land of temples'. Also known as Vrindaban or Brindavan, it is one of the holiest towns in India. Historically, Vrindavan was a forest where Lord Krishna, the Hindu deity spent most of his childhood days playing with children from their village. Though the forests no longer remain, Vrindavan today has become a sacred site of pilgrimage for millions of devotees who pay regular visits. The town is essentially renowned for its beautiful and historic temples, some of which have existed since the time it was formed. Though there are hundreds of temples strewn across the town today, some of the most beautiful and ancient temples are located at historic sites close to River Yamuna and its ghats. Prominent temples to visit in Vrindavan are the magnificent Govinda Deo temple, the architecturally brilliant Sri Rangji Temple, the Shahji Temple, the immensely beautiful Iskcon Temple as well as the Banke Bihari Temple. The Keshi Ghat, which runs along the north is the site of many a rituals and celebrations attributed to the great river Yamuna. Though much of the glorious Vrindavan that history talks about is lost today to urbanization, its charm lives on in the temples and ancient ghats.
