Occupied since the Neolithic era and also a Roman settlement, the city of Straubing is a bustling cultural hub. Located on the shores of Danube, the city was established in the 13th Century by Duke Ludwig I Wittelsbach of Bavaria. Medieval architecture and Gothic buildings provide a contrast to the metropolitan culture that has developed over the years. The Baroque style Carmelite monastery, Gothic City Tower and Basilica St.Jakob are some of the must-see landmarks. With nightclubs, restaurants and the famous Straubing Zoo shaping the urban landscape, the Gaubodenvolksfest (second largest of its kind in Bavaria) defines the city's cultural life. With so much to explore, the city makes for a great overnight or an elaborate day trip.
