Hasselt is a Belgian city with a history dating all the way back to the Seventh Century when it was established on the banks of the Heelbeek river as a free city in the Loon county. The city is especially known for its historic architecture which is concentrated in the town center. Some places to see while here include the Refugehuis and Abbey of Herkenrode, the Japanese gardens, Saint Quentin's Cathedral and the National Jenever Museum. Several festivals, sports events and religious meets also take place in this city.
