One of the most popular gathering spaces for the community, Cathedral Square Park is bustling with life and activity. It is centrally located in JuneauTown, right next to the Cathedral of St. John, which gives the park its name. The city gave the park status in 1939 and changed the name from Courthouse Square to the present one. The square used to house a jail and courthouse, and it was the scene for the famous event in 1854 when about 5,000 locals came together to protest the arrest of a runaway slave, Joshua Glover. Though the courthouse and jail are gone, the square still holds a prominent place in the city's soul due to it is role as a venue for various popular events like Jazz In The Park and other summer fests.
