Royal George Theatre

The plainly stated, white building with Corinthian columns and red trim leads patrons into a theater adorned with gilded lions, red walls and an atmosphere ready to impress any regular entertainment goer. Once the home of a blacksmith shop, the neoclassical building seats 328 patrons and entertained troops with vaudeville acts in the 1920s and 1930s. The Royal George Theater is one of four theaters that caters to Queen Street crowds and hosts the annual Shaw Festival. Started by the lawyer and playwright, Brian Doherty, in 1962, the Shaw Festival is meant to feature the many works of Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries.
