Nestled along the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River, the city of Ottawa was named after the Native Ottawa tribe who lived here in the 17th century. The Appanoose Area Museum is a good place to visit for a lowdown on ancient tribes, their customs and artifacts that have been preserved and showcased so beautifully. The 1859-built Dietrich Cabin is an ode to a brave couple who defended the area during times of war and destruction. Present day Ottawa is a lovely laid back place where foodies can indulge in a host of culinary specialties with the BBQ joints, taverns, coffee houses, Mexican, Chinese and world cuisine options that line the downtown area.
