No trip to Townsville is complete without a visit to the Reef HQ Aquarium, the largest living coral reef aquarium in the world. It was established by Dr. Graeme Kelleher as part of the Bicentennial Commemorative project and features hundreds of coral, fish, and aquatic species, including sea cucumbers, urchins, and sponges. The coral reef exhibit of the aquarium is temperature controlled and the wave motion which is artificially created by the Pneumatic Wave Machine. The park not only serves the public, but it also helps protect the Great Barrier Reef.
