Makartsteg, Salzburg, Austria, 5020
Built across the Salzach River, the Makartsteg bridge was first erected in the year 1905 and connected the two parts of the city on either sides of the river. Named after renowned Austrian artist Hans Makart, this bridge underwent its first reconstruction in the year 1967 and was then popular as the 'swinging bridge' as one could feel the bridge move as you walked down to the middle. With over 20,000 pedestrians crossing it on an average day, it became apparent that the swing effect was indeed dangerous and it led to the reconstruction and opening of the bridge that exists today in the year 2000. The bridge is noted for its unique contemporary style that bring in many tourists and architecture buffs. Being a bridge reserved for cyclists and pedestrians only, one can often watch a street performer or musicians display their skills here at the bridge. So the next time you are in the city of Salzburg, do make a visit to the city's unique Makartsteg bridge.
