Malie, or Pall-Mall as it was called in English, was a lawn game in the 16th and 17th Centuries that was a forerunner of croquet. It was for this game that the Malieveld was originally cleared, but as the game has been out of fashion for centuries, its been put to other use in intervening years. It largely serves as the assembly ground for fairs, rallies, markets and public gatherings, and numerous events take place here. It is the gateway to the Haagse Bos and the main venue for community events organized on the eastern side of town. There are also soccer fields and a small running track here.
