From the establishment in 1904 of this little town in the Rio Grande Valley to the present day, it has seen its ups-and-downs. Today however it remains a vibrant center of commerce. The downtown area roughly encompasses the area between Harrison and Jefferson Avenues and First and Sixth Streets. Throughout the year the district holds events and happenings, some include the popular Jackson St. Market held the first Saturday of every month, Harlingen Art Night and Jammin' on Jackson. Another couple of highlights include the impressive amount of murals scattered around the neighborhood and the preserved Texan architecture.
