Since its inception in 1830, this society has been dedicated to following, and consistently so, its aim and motto of working towards the 'advancement of geographical science'. Founded as the Geographical Society, it flourished under the patronage of King William IV and received the Royal Charter in 1859. As a learning society, the Royal Geographical Society commissions grants and organizes expeditions, and even aids research initiatives. It also organizes various exhibitions and other learning events that are open to the public as well. The facilities of the society are also given for hire for various events.
