Oberalteich Abbey is a 11th-century monastery founded by Count Frederick of Bogen and was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The abbey succumbed to a serious fire in 1245 and was rebuilt with Baroque refurbishments over a period of years. The magnificent facade features rich decorations with a high altar that dates back to 1693. During the 1803 secularization of Bavaria, the abbey was dissolved and its monuments were removed and reused for the construction of a dam in Viloshofen.
