Amid the hectic enclave of fickle, trend-setting streets, it seems that some things are here to stay. Maison Bertaux is an unpretentious and authentic little patisserie that holds sway between a strip club and an old pub. A simple interior and rudimentary decor lends it a traditional French charm and paysan appeal, pulling in a cosmopolitan crew of media trendies, ambling tourists and it's a favorite fixture with locals who like to feel continental. The window is impeccably adorned with glorious freshly made gateaux, flans, patisseries and delicate confiseries, and the Maison serves some of the best quiches, croissants and tarts, as well as vegetarian savories. Service can be a little capricious and hassled at busy times. This is definitely an experience not to be missed and, as there is very limited space, you should phone ahead to reserve your place.
