818 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville, WV, United States, 26041
An old Gothic-style prison, West Virginia State Penitentiary was once used to lock up some of the city's most hardened criminals. Most notable for its imposing structure and dark facade, the very sight of this structure is said to send shivers down the spine. Dating back to 1876, the site continued to function as a prison until the 1960s, witnessing a number of interesting prison break attempts and riots through its history. Now a prominent historic attraction, visitors can tour the building and browse through some of the most significant cells and rooms within it.
