The Altes Theater in Magdeburg started out as a riding arena back in the 1920s. As the desire for theater houses grew, the building was converted from a riding area to a theater. Today, the avant-garde theater hosts a diverse range of live theaterical performances. Besides regularly staged performances, the theater also has community dance workshops that range from classes with electronic and Indie music to traditional German music. Newer rooms like the Holzfoyer, Buhnenhaus and Foyer have been built within the Altes Theater to function as cultural venues, meeting rooms and exhibition spaces.
