Alte Feuerwache is an institution that stands as a testament to Germany's war torn past. In 1912 it was a fire station built in the Neo Baroque style but as time passed, it quickly became defunct. The city council decided to demolish it and build a swanky new cultural center however the wistful citizens of Mannheim protested and didn't want to let go of a poignant reminder of their past. The result was a cultural center built in 1981 which is now a melting pot for artists to come together and perform. Book readings, music festivals, drama, jazz concerts and more are now held within these historic confines.
