Located in the Avenues West neighborhood of Milwaukee, Marquette University is a private, coeducational Jesuit university. Founded in 1881, Marquette is one of 28 institutions in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Marquette is also Wisconsin's largest private university. It was founded by John Martin Henni who was the first Catholic bishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The university is named after Father Jacques Marquette, S.J., a 17th-century missionary and explorer. Marquette's beautiful campus is home to the St. Joan of Arc Chapel, a Medieval French chapel that made its way to the US all the way from its original location in Chasse, France. The campus is also home to the Haggerty Museum of Art featuring works from various artistic periods and styles.
