Not far from Brownsville lies the very ground of the first battle of the Mexican-American War of 1846. Greatly illustrating the causes and effects of the battle, this erstwhile battleground is yet dotted with battle remnants, which are a stunning reminder of that one chapter in history that changed the course of North America. It is as if the natural and cultural landscape of the site has remained unchanged over the years, permeated by the valiant stride of the many Americans and Mexicans who suffered the ravages of the battle. On the flip side, the park is as much steeped in nature, where rolling grounds of prairie are studded with reeds, ravines and groves of towering mesquite trees. In addition, an assemblage of wildlife like bobcats, coyotes and peccaries rove across the vast, sprawling expanse of the field.
