In 1898, an architectural and urban planning style known as the Garden City Movement arose in Europe, in which townships were planned to have the optimum balance of residential buildings, green zones, agricultural land and industries. Hellerau is a neighborhood of Dresden and has the distinction of being Germany's first garden city. It was designed in 1909 by well-known architects of that time, including the likes of Hermann Muthesius, Bruno Paul, Heinrich Tessenow, Richard Riemerschmid and Wilhelm Kreis. It served as a community and cultural hub and was visited by intellectuals and famous people in Europe. Today, glimpses of the historic architecture still persist, with vintage houses, quaint streets, pristine gardens and wild foliage standing like an oasis in urbanized Dresden.
