In 1970, Jonas Mekas founded the Anthology Film Archives as a permanent home for a collection of underground and avant-garde films. The current facility, opened in the early 1980s, houses two theatres, a reference library, a film preservation department, offices and a gallery. It shows independent, classic, foreign and avant-garde cinema not seen anywhere else. Check the Web site for current schedules. The library and archive can be accessed by the public, but only by appointment.
