Originally opened in 1921, and having gone through several refurbishments and changes, it is easy to miss the Maddermarket Theatre, since any attempt to find the entrance will involve going down a narrow passageway; but do not let this discourage you. The building itself is an architectural curiosity, a new modern frontage grafted on to a old catholic chapel with Tudor features. There is also a bar. This is a fantastic theater, which is affectionately named the "people's theatre". The theater runs throughout the year, and has a small but by no means limited programme. Always offering something different and unusual to the mainstream theaters in Norwich, and often premiering new works and lesser-staged works by well-known playwrights, the performances are fine all-round.
