Fortezza Medicea or the Fortezza di Santa Barbara is a historical fort built in Siena which dates back to the mid-16th Century. The fort was built on an earlier citadel which was destroyed when Siena was defeated in a battle against Florence. The shape of the fort is rectangular and it has brick ramparts flanking all four sides. On the Southeastern side of the fort is a statue of the patron saint of the city, Saint Catherine. Today the fort's grounds are used as a public park, and the interior of the fort has been transformed into a theater.
