This park surrounds the majestic Mount Diablo with a carpet of greenery that is spread across 20,000 acres (8,000 hectares) of pristine landscape. Home to a complex mesh of wildernesses, the park is marked by a system of interconnecting hiking trails, with more than a dozen of them reaching elevations of over 3,000 feet (914.4 meters). At this height, it is needless to say that the park offers unsurpassed views of the San Francisco Bay Area and Yosemite. The mountain and surrounding areas were originally home to over 20 different tribes of Native Americans, including the Ohlone and Bay Miwok, who believed that Mount Diablo symbolized the point of creation. The landscape also offers a fair share of wildlife viewing, sheltering black-tailed deer, grey foxes, tiger salamanders and California ground squirrels.
