Built in the early 19th Century the Missouri State Penitentiary is one of the oldest structures in the city. It operated as a prison for 168 years and later replaced by the Jefferson City Correctional Center. A few of the famous inmates include names such as Kate Richards O'Hare, Emma Goldman, James Earl Ray and a few others. Over the years the prison has seen many deaths due to the riots and brawls.
