Watched over by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, the Milestone Bog is home to the island's oldest and largest cranberry farm. Spread over a sprawling area of 700 acres (283 hectares), the bog is the ideal setting for the cultivation of a variety of cranberry varieties, sold at local stores and at the Foundation's office under the brand name of Nantucket Cranberries. Bogs awash in the vibrant red of ripe cranberries lie surrounded by rolling, verdant hills teeming with deer, red-tailed hawks and unusual plant life, together forming a natural tapestry of beauty that is sure to mesmerize. Several hiking and biking trails traverse the property, leading right up to the edge of the bogs. The best time to visit is right before the harvest, when the cranberries are at their prime, transforming the landscape into a sea of red. The entrance to Milestone Bog can be found about 4.2 miles (6.8 kilometers) from the Rotary along Milestone Road and is marked by a rock with the number "220" on its side.
