A huge urban district in the city of Savannah, the Savannah Historic District has numerous buildings of historic and architectural significance. Declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1966, this area is planned on the concept of wards and squares with each ward featuring a central square and civic buildings around it. Examples of Federal, Victorian, Gothic and Greek Revival architecture can be seen among the late 18th- and early 19th-century buildings in the locality, with plenty of green spaces in between them, attracting large number of visitors annually. Some of the landmark historical and religious buildings located within the district include the First African Baptist Church, the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex, the Old Harbor Light, Temple Mickve Israel Synagogue and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
