Burgh Castle is a historic site featuring several Roman shore forts dating back to the 3rd century AD. These forts were built for defense purpose on the slopy steep ground near the River Waveney. The forts protected Britain from attacks by invaders and pirates from the North Sea. It is not only a historic site but also has a rich flora and fauna dwelling in a natural environment. It is now an English Heritage site open to public free of charge.
