Pastel-coloured houses and crooked little streets give this holiday resort its medieval charm. But it has not always been so tranquil here. In the 5th century Caorle and its port were one of the largest cities in Northern Italy, however, this commercial centre lost its importance as the harbour gradually silted up and became no longer navigable for ships. Worth visiting is the 11th century Romanesque-Byzantine brick basilica with its belfry 48 m high.
