The second largest fishing port on the Algarve with its 35,000 inhabitants has remained relatively 'normal.' Beach activity and throngs of tourists are found primarily in the famous suburb of Praia da Rocha. One of Portimão's best shopping streets is the Rua do Comércio, which begins at the old market square. The enticing local speciality at the old quay is charcoal-grilled sardines.
