This musical, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by former ABBA bandmates Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, commences in a mountain town in Italy, where an epic and highly political match is to occur as two preeminent chess players from both America and the Soviet Union prepare to challenge each other on a world stage. The tensions are nearly unbearable as the American's handler, Florence attempts to navigate through the mess of personal pride, ego and politics. A love triangle between Florence, the Russian and the American develops, as their emotions play out both in and out of the game. Based on the real-life chess match between Soviet and American chess masters during the height of the Cold War, the show has seen multiple evolutions through its development.
